63 medal decisions at the „Youth Olympic Games“ in Innsbruck

IOC Coordination full of praise

Innsbruck (pps) After a three-day inspection of Innsbruck, the host of the first “Youth Olympic Winter Games”, the Coordination Commission of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) said that they were very impressed.

“We are impressed with the progress of preparations and the quality of the venues to be used for the Youth Olympic Games. The Organizing Committee is very much on track with the involvement of all local authorities through the Olympia Forum Tirol,” said Gian-Franco Kasper, Chairman of the Coordination Commission, and President of the International Ski Federation (FIS). Other members of the commission are the Olympic champions and IOC members Pernilla Wiberg (Sweden) and Rebecca Scott (Canada).

The planned budget for the YOG in Innsbruck is 15 million Euros. From January 13 to 22, 2012, 1,048 athletes between 15 and 19 years of age will be competing in 63 medal decisions in all seven Olympic winter sports. In luge, medals will be awarded in women’s singes, men’s single, doubles and in the Team Relay. 20 women, 20 men and 15 doubles will be eligible to start.

The International Luge Federation has published its final report to the International Olympic Committee (IOC) on the fatal luge accident of Nodar Kumaritashvili at Whistler Sliding Center on February 12, 2010.

The International Luge Federation has launched a donation campaign to financially support the family of Nodar Kumaritashvili. The athlete from Georgia died in a training accident on the opening day of the Olympic Winter Games in Vancouver, at the age of 21.
