According to a IOC and BOCOG press release, the two emblems combine traditional and modern elements of Chinese culture, as well as features embodying the passion and vitality of winter sports.

The Olympic Winter Games emblem was inspired by the Chinese character for “winter”. It resembles a skater at the top and a skier at the bottom with a flowing ribbon-like motif between, symbolising the host country’s rolling mountains and the various Olympic venues.

The emblem of the Beijing 2022 Paralympic Winter Games is named ‘Flying High’, making similar use of Chinese calligraphy with incorporating the Chinese character for ‘fly’ which conjures up the image of a wheelchair athlete surging towards the finish line and victory.

The 2022 Olympic Winter Games are scheduled for February 4-20, 2022, the Paralympic Winter Games are due to take place from March 4-13, 2022.
