Berchtesgaden (RWH) The International Luge Federation (FIL) is in mourning for two-time Olympic Champion Steffi Walter. The gold medallist in the 1984 Winter Olympics in Sarajevo in the former Yugoslavia, while competing under her maiden name of Martin, and in 1988 in Calgary (CAN), died on 21 June at the age of just 54.

Steffi Walter, alongside two-time Olympic Champion and five-time World Champion Sylke Otto, was one of Germany’s most successful lugers in. She leaves behind husband Gernot and three children. In recent years, Steffi Walter had for the most part retreated from the public eye.

The former track and field athlete twice won the World Championship title in luge (1983 and 1985), and was the overall winner of the World Cup in the 1983/1984 winter season.
