German Olympic Sports Confederation receives IOC Award „Sport and the Environment“

Eighth World Conference “Sport and Environment” in Vancouver, Canada

Vancouver (pps) The German Olympic Sports Confederation (DOSB) has received the first-ever IOC Award “Sport and the Environment” for its environmental commitment. At the eighth World Conference “Sport and Environment” in Vancouver, Canada, on Monday, the guide “Green champions in sport and environment“ to environmentally-sound large sporting events was recognized as best European contribution. This guide is issued by the DOSB together with the German Federal Ministry for the Environment.

The first-ever award was also awarded to projects in Africa (Green Africa Foundation/ Kenya), America (Oregon Track Club/USA), Asia (Beijing Municipal Environmental Protection Bureau and the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games Organizing Committee BOCOG) and Oceania (“Rainbow Project” New Zealand).

The global conference is organized jointly by the International Olympic Committee (IOC) and the Vancouver 2010 Organising Committee (VANOC), in close partnership with the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP). Josef Fendt, the President of the International Luge Federation, is a member of the IOC commission “Sport and Environment”.
