Armin Zoeggeler "Well aware of this great honour"

Declined offer to be Italy's flag-bearer with a heavy heart

Cesana (pps/February 2, 2010) Similar to the situation prior to the Olympic Games "back home" in Turin, Olympic luge champion Armin Zoeggeler again had a heavy heart when he declined to be Italy's flag-bearer during the Opening Ceremony of the Olympic Winter Games in Vancouver, Canada. "I'm well aware of the great honour that I was named to be flag-bearer. But since the first two runs in the men's singles are scheduled for the day after the Opening Ceremony I'm not in a position to accept this honourable offer", explained the gold medal winner of the 2002 Olympic Games in Salt Lake City (USA) and 2006 in Turin (ITA).

Five-times World champion Zoeggeler will be competing in his fifth Olympic Games in Vancouver - and at every start he had earned a medal: apart from the gold medals in 2002 and 2006, additionally bronze in Lillehammer, Norway, in 1994 and silver four years later in Nagano, Japan.

By the way, Germany's three-times Olympic champion Georg Hackl had also declined all offers to be the flag-bearer of Germany's Olympic team at the Opening Ceremonies. And similar to Zoeggeler, Hackl also justified turning down this offer with the Olympic luge events that started the day after the Opening Ceremony...
