Winterberg (pps) Olympic champion Tatjana Huefner had the honour to achieve the 100th victory in the women’s singles for Germany at the Viessmann Luge World Cup. At the second stop of the World Cup series in Winterberg the two-time World champion celebrated the 23rd individual victory of her career. Second place went to Huefner’s team-mate and Olympic bronze medallist Natalie Geisenberger (0,614 seconds behind). Canada’s Alex Gough, 2009 World Championship fourth-placed in Lake Placid, USA, took third place (0,742 seconds behind) and thus achieved her best result ever in Viessmann luge World Cup.
The longest winning series world-wide started on December 6, 1997 in Innsbruck-Igls with the first World Cup victory of Barbara Niedernhuber. Subsequently, the two-time Olympic silver medallist added another four wins. Silke Kraushaar-Pielach, however, supplied the lion’s share with a total of 33 victories, followed by Sylke Otto with 29 wins. The current Olympic champion Tatjana Huefner (23 victories) holds third place on this special ranking list. Olympic bronze medallist Natalie Geisenberger added six and Anke Wischnewski contributed one victory (Altenberg in 2004). Last but not least the 1999 World champion Sonja Wiedemann added another three wins.
The Quotes:
Tatjana Huefner (GER / 2010 Olympic champion):
“That was something very special. I’ve tried not to think about it prior to the race. It’s important to remember that others have also contributed to this winning series. Of course, every winning series will come to an end one day. But we’ll all give it our best shot that this day will not come too soon.
Natalie Geisenberger (GER / 2010 Olympic bronze medallist):
“I’m happy with second place. I’ve had two good runs and in between I’ve made the right changes on my sled. But the gap to Tatjana is still to big.”
Alex Gough (CAN / 2009 World Championship fourth-placed):
“I’m very happy. This is the best result of my career. I hope that things will keep on going well.”
