Rio de Janeiro awarded 2016 Olympic Summer Games

Copenhagen (pps) Rio de Janeiro will be the first South-American city to host Olympic Games. Brazil’s metropolis with its six million inhabitants was elected at the 121st Session of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) in Copenhagen. In the third and final round of voting, Rio de Janeiro received 66 votes compared to 32 votes for the Spanish capital Madrid. In the first round, Chicago (USA) was ousted with 18 votes; Tokyo (JPN) was eliminated in the second ballot with 20 votes.

„Live your passion“, is the Olympic vision of Rio de Janeiro, the 2003 venue of the Congress of the International Luge Federation (FIL). Before, Rio had been unsuccessful with five Olympic bids (1936, 1940, 1960, 2004 and 2012).

The XXXI Summer Games will take place from August 5 to 21, 2016. Two years before the Olympic Games, the 2014 Football World Cup will be staged in Brazil.

The budget amounts to 2.82 billion US dollars. Besides this, investments of 11.1 billion dollars are planned. Brazil is currently listed as the world’s tenth largest economy. The World Bank predicts that it will have reached rank five by 2016.
