Guatemala City (pps). The XXII. Olympic Winter Games will take place in Sochi, Russia. At the 119th Session of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) in Guatemala City, Sochi was elected in the second round of voting with 51 votes against 47 votes for PyeongChang. Salzburg’s bid was eliminated in the first ballot.
The 2014 competition venues and the Olympic Village will be newly constructed in Sochi, a city of 328,000 inhabitants located at Russia’s Black Sea coast, and in the Caucasus Mountains around the city of Krasnaya Polyana, at a distance of about 50 km from Sochi. For the luge, bobsleigh and skeleton competitions, a new ice track center will be built with a capacity of 11,000 spectators.
