For the time being not to beat. That´s what all their competitors say about the Polish double Andrzey Laszczak/Damian Waniczek. After the saison opener in Voels they also won the World Cup race in Umhausen. “They can´t do anything wrong it seems”, says World Cup rookie Alex Innerbichler from Italy. But Reinhard Beer from Austria has another explaination for the impressive performance of the Polish. “Poland is still ranked as a socalled development nation in luge, so they can go to all the training camps of the federations and therefore get more training runs. We Austrians can´t go there, we are too strong.” But Beer does not take this as a disadvantage. “It is just an additional challenge.”
Too much of a challenge was the second run for the young brothers Günther (19) and Alex (17) Innerbichler from Italy. Second after the first run they completely messed up their second run and so finished fourth. “We had two big mistakes and I guess it was a question of nerves,” says Alex after the race.
Mentally stronger was their young Italian team mate Barbara Abart (17). With two constant performances she took the second place behind Ekatarina Lavrentjeva (RUS) in today´s race and the lead in the overall World Cup. “My goals this year are the European Junior Championships and the Italian Championships. As far as the World Cup is concerned, I am happy when I can take part.” Last year´s queen of the World Cup, Sonja Steinacher finished third, she had problems with her runnings. Elvira Holzknecht, who suffered from an injury on her hand, turned in 9th in her come back race.
