Reinhard Beer and Herbert Kögl celebrated their first World Cup victory after Beer´s injury suffered at the World Championships in Stein/Enns. "We have a very good feeling on the sledge, the material works perfectly for us and we are getting better run by run," says Herbert Kögl after the race. But it had not looked like such a clear victory when they crossed the finish line in the second run. With a careful look they first checked the times before they dared to rise their arms. "We had a very bad mistake right after the start. After our excellent first run we wanted to do a safty run in the second, but after that mistake, a saftey run was no longer an option", explains Reinhard Beer. However, the doubleseater´s World Cup decision is going to be a very tight one. Harald Kleinhofer and Gerhard Mühlbacher (AUT), second today, are becoming stronger and stronger. "When we were really bad last year and in January not even qualified for the World Cup, we used the time and worked a lot with our sledge. This is our advantage in this season." They do not want to think about the overall World Cup. "Not yet. There are two more races coming and everything can happen. But we are the only double that has been on the podium in each race, so that gives a lot of confidence", says Kleinhofer. In the women´s event there was no new face on top of the podium. Sonja Steinacher (ITA) won the fourth race in this season. Now she is going for the record of Irene Zechner (AUT) and Elvira Holzknecht (AUT). They are the only two athletes who managed to win five consecutive races. Zechner did so in the season 1994/95 and Holzknecht won all four races in the winter of 1994/95 plus the first one in the next winter. First World Cup Victory for Robert Batkowski (AUT)"I am very happy and very relaxed", says Robert Batkowski in his first interview as a World Cup winner, "I did not have perfect runs, but two good ones." Gerhard Pilz, who just proved how well he knows the scene, already had Batkowski on his list for the victory long before the race was started. "But I can live with it, if Batkowski should win, he really is ready for his first victory," the five-times-World Champion had said before the race. He himself had to settle for the sixth place (due to a broken sledge in the first run) and lost his lead position in the Overall World Cup to Ferdinand Hirzegger, who became second today. Bad luck also had former World Champion Gerald Kallan (AUT), who ruined his sledge with a stone right after the start in the first run and came down with the 17th time.Apart from the tight decisions at the top of the field, a very young and strong German team proved to be a promise for the future. Even though Marcus Grausam is not in best shape due to an ancle injury suffered in training during the Christmas Holidays and therefore finished only 20th . "We do have a very good team, they just had been too young for the World Cup so far. This year a few of them were taken on te tour and they are doing pretty well," says Grausam and thinks of athletes like Georg Maurer or Björn Kierspel. When the World Cup scene leaves Umhausen today and moves on to Hüttau, it might be a good-bye for not too long. The organizers of the RED BULL World Cup in Umhausen want to turn in a bid for the World Championships in 2007. "After 2003 in Slovenia and 2005 in Italy, Austria should have good chances in 2007 again", says Willi Kammerlander from Umhausen. With the World Campionships in 2007 the World Cup of course would return to Umhausen before that. The decision about the Championships will fall in 2004.
