Two triple victories for Germany in Igls
Second World Cup victory for Sonja Wiedemann – Leitner/Resch win double’s competition

Igls. There were even two triple victories for Germany at the Viessmann luge World Cup in Igls. With a total time of 1:21.078 minutes in the women’s competition, Sonja Wiedemann, World Champion from 1999, achieved her second World Cup victory after her first success in Calgary in the past winter. Olympic champion Silke Kraushaar (1:21.180) from Oberhof and Barbara Niedernhuber (1:21.423) from Berchtesgaden finished in ranks two and three. Angelika Neuner (1:21.558) and Simone Eder (1:21.871) from Austria ended up in ranks four and five. The World Champion Sylke Otto messed up her first run, but managed to advance from rank 27 to rank 10 with this day’s best run (1:22.245).

In the double’s race the World Champions Patric Leitner/Alexander Resch (1:20.718) won in front of Andre Florschütz/Torsten Wustlich (1:20.765) and the World Cup leaders Steffen Skel/Steffen Wöller (1:20.770):

Opinions:

Sonja Wiedemann: „For me this victory was especially important as I could prove that I deserve to be a part of the German team“.

Silke Kraushaar: „This is a great success for me because here in Igls I never managed to be better than rank seven or eight. Now I have a little bit of a bolster for the World Cup, however, you can see in the case of Sylke Otto, how easy it is to lose some points.“

Barbara Niedernhuber: „This is all I can achieve right now. At the moment I cannot race the times that are necessary to win, but this is a problem of my sled rather than myself.”

Patric Leitner: „This triple victory as in the women’s competition is unbelievable. In the double’s race the time margins get smaller and smaller, in fact they were never as small as they are now.“

Andre Florschütz: „This is the third second place in a row, but I would not mind going on like this for the whole winter. In this season we are all on good terms and wake each other‘s ambitions for top results.“
