Salzburg (FIL) On September 25, 2021, the delegates of the 69th FIL Congress in Salzburg selected Whistler, Canada, as the venue of the 53rd FIL Luge World Championships in 2025.

The Canadian Luge Federation won with the 2010 Olympic track in Whistler with 14 votes. Competitor St. Moritz (Switzerland) received eleven votes from the delegates. The two bidders Lake Placid (USA) and Sigulda (Latvia) withdrew their candidature on the day of the Congress in favor of Whistler because Canada had the bid for the 50th FIL World Championships in 2021 and had to relinquish it due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

This is the fourth time that Canada has hosted a FIL Luge World Championships. While the 1988 Olympic track in Calgary hosted the FIL World Championships in 1990 and 1993, the Whistler Sliding Center hosted the World Championships in 2013. Last winter, the 50th FIL Luge World Championships were to be held in Whistler. Due to entry and quarantine regulations as a result of the current pandemic, the 50th anniversery World Championships had to be moved to Königssee in Bavaria in January 2021.

Stephen Harris, Sport Director of Luge Canada: "Hosting a World Cup in your own country is of great importance and offers great opportunities to promote the sport. The impact of the 2021 World Championships cancellation was seen both on the revenue side and in our ability to showcase the sport of luge across Canada. With the 2025 World Championships, we can raise awareness and increase recruitment of young talent to the sport of luge."

Tim Farstad, Presentation WM Whistler 2025

Tim Farstad Executive Director Luge Canada: "We are excited that international luge is coming back to Canada. In the last two years we have seen little luge sport in our country. We want to offer high class sport again and celebrate together. That's why we will put on a great show. See you in 2025".

The 2024 Junior World Championships on artificial track were awarded to Lillehammer (NOR).

The 2024 Junior World Championships on natural track will be hosted by Winterleiten (AUT).
