Berchtesgaden (FIL) The luge and bobsleigh track in Altenberg (GER) and the future Olympic track for the 2010 Olympic Winter Games in Vancouver, which is located in Whistler, Canada, are both bidding to host the 2012 Luge World Championships. Both applications were submitted to the International Luge Federation (FIL) before the expiration of the bidding deadline. The decision regarding the host of the 43rd FIL World Championships will be made during the 56th FIL Congress in Calgary, Canada, on June 27/28, 2008.
Altenberg already hosted Luge World Championships in 1996 as well as FIBT World Championships in 1991, 2000 and 2008. The facility was built in the eighties and was recently extensively renovated with an expenditure of approximately four million Euros.
The Canadian track located at Whistler Sliding Center was completed this winter and will see its baptism of fire in the upcoming season at the final of the Viessmann World Cup at the end of February.
