A spectacular start: 53rd FIL Luge World Championships officially opened in Whistler

Whistler (FIL/05 Feb 2025) The 53rd FIL Luge World Championships were opened on the evening of February 5 with a magnificent and entertaining opening ceremony at Whistler Village Square. Athletes, officials and fans came together and celebrated in sub-zero temperatures in an entertaining show. The world's best lugers were officially welcomed in front of the breathtaking backdrop of the Blackcomb Mountains, marking the start of an exciting week of competition at the renowned Whistler Sliding Center.

The festivities kicked off at 7pm to an electric atmosphere, with a DJ and dancers getting the crowd in the mood. The evening's highlight was the Parade of Nations, where 163 athletes from 21 countries marched proudly through the Village Square, waving their national flags as the crowd cheered them on. The unity and spirit among the teams was tangible and emphasized the camaraderie that characterizes international sport.

Dignitaries from the International Luge Federation (FIL), Luge Canada and local government were in attendance and pleased that Whistler is hosting the Championships for the second time since 2013. FIL President Einars Fogelis (LAT) proclaimed the official opening of the 53rd FIL Luge World Championships. A stunning light show and video presentation on the big screen lit up the night sky, signaling the start of a competition that promises to be unforgettable.

As the athletes now shift their focus to the track, the energy of the ceremony will carry them into the upcoming races.
