After victory in Sigulda: Eggert/Benecken set their sights on Sics brothers

Sigulda (FIL) Toni Eggert and Sascha Benecken are not beaten yet in the fight for the overall victory at the EBERSPÄHER Luge World Cup. In Sigulda, the German doubles dominated ahead of the brothers Andris and Juris Sics. The Latvians, leaders in the overall standings, were 0.037 seconds behind. Olympic champions Tobias Wendl and Tobias Arlt (Germany/0.193 sec. back) came in third.

This was the 49th World Cup victory for Eggert/Benecken. When will the 50th follow? In tomorrow's sprint or next week at the home race in Oberhof? "The statistics are something for those who write on the outside," said backdriver Sascha Benecken, "we fill the tables, but we don't write them." Therefore, frontdriver Toni Eggert does not think much of tactics and wants to attack in the sprint. But Andris Sics also has this plan. The helmsman had already known when he crossed the finish line that the ride would not be enough for victory. "The middle part was good, but in the lower part our ride was not so clean," was his analysis. In the sprint the brothers have an advantage, because there the starting performance does not matter so much.

Sascha Benecken reported on the mood among the leading duos. At the start, the German doubles joked with the Latvians about their mishap last weekend in Winterberg, when both sleds had tipped over in the final bend. "We said that we want to do better this time," said the German. And teammate Tobias Arlt is also having a lot of fun: "It's incredibly fun to race at the moment."
The Italians Ivan Nagler and Fabian Malleier provided two special moments: in both the first and the second run the South Tyroleans achieved start records, first they passed the first lightbeam after 1.505 seconds, then they improved by another thousandth of a second. In the end they were ninth (0.715) and thus the third best duo from Italy behind Emanuel Rieder and Simon Kainzwaldner (fourth/0.288) and Ludwig Rieder/Patrick Rastner (seventh/0.679).
On Sunday, 9 January 2022, the women's singles will start from 10.00 a.m. (local time Latvia) for the 7th EBERSPÄCHER World Cup in Sigulda.
