Albert Demchenko eyes up his eighth Olympic Games

Moscow (RWH): Three years after leaving the sport, the three-time Olympic silver medallist Albert Demchenko of Russia is planning his comeback as an athlete and eyeing up with eighth Olympic Games. The 46-year-old announced his plans to the Russian news agency TASS now.  However, he also told journalists in Moscow that he still has to undergo extensive medical tests.

Demchenko won silver in the men’s singles event in 2006 and 2014 and also finished second with the Russian relay team in Sochi.  More recently Demchenko has been working as Russia’s head coach, a role in which he has enjoyed huge success, particularly in the men’s events. For instance, he saw Semen Pavlichenko become the first Russian to win the World Championships at the 2015 event. In the final winter season before the Olympics, Demchenko’s protégés Roman Repilov secured silver at the World Championships in Innsbruck-Igls. Repilov also finished first in the overall standings for the Viessmann World Cup.
