Calgary (pps) As the Viessmann Luge World Cup series is kicking off at Innsbruck-Igls (November 27-28) in Austria, Alex Gough, Brendan Hauptman as well as Tristan Walker-Justin Snith will head to Europe as the “masters” of Canadian luge after winning the national Canadian Luge Championships at Canada Olympic Park in Calgary. The 23-year-old Hauptman surprisingly captured his first national title in just his second year of sliding, thus relegating Olympians Sam Edney and Jeff Christie to second and third place respectively. Alex Gough, fourth-placed at the 2009 Worlds in Lake Placid, found her way back onto the top of the women's podium after claiming her fourth national crown. With the retirement of Olympians Regan Lauscher and Meaghan Simister, Gough was pressed by a new group of young athletes vying for a spot on the World Cup team: Arianne Jones and Kim McRae finished second and third respectively. Olympic doubles team Tristan Walker and Justin Snith, bronze medalists at the 2009 FIL Junior World Championships, won their first national doubles title, thus following in the footsteps of Chris Moffat and Mike Moffat who have ended their active career.
