Andris and Juris Sics take home victory in Viessmann World Cup at 15th attempt

Sigulda (RWH) Lugers Andris and Juris Sics have demonstrated that they are not yet ready for the scrap heap. The brothers, who are 34 and 36 respectively, have been competing in the Viessmann World Cup since the winter of 2004/2005 and have finally claimed a maiden victory on their home track. Some eight weeks after their first victory in the BMW Sprint World Cup in Lake Placid in early December last year, Sics/Sics clinched the second individual win of their career – and their first in the Olympic discipline – ahead of two-time Olympic Champions Tobias Wendl/Tobias Arlt and double World Champions Toni Eggert/Sascha Benecken (all GER), who finished second and third respectively.
The Latvians, who claimed Olympic silver in 2010, now move up to fourth in the overall standings on 441 points. Eggert/Benecken retain their lead on 667 points ahead of Wendl/Arlt (602). Third is held by the Austrians Thomas Steu/Lorenz Koller (486), who have been forced to sit out the rest of the season after Steu sustained a fractured tibia and fibula in a training accident.
Quotes
Andris Sics (LAT / Olympic silver medallist in 2010 and Olympic bronze medallist in Team Relay 2014)
“It’s unbelievable! Winning a World Cup race on our home track – the feeling is hard to put into words. Thanks to all the coaches, staff and friends who have given us so much support. We have won the sprint race in Lake Placid, but this is our first World Cup victory in the Olympic discipline so it really is very special.”
Tobias Wendl (GER / Olympic Champion 2014 and 2018)
“That was a good comeback after last week’s race. We made some changes to our equipment. I think we are on the right track now. I’m delighted for the Sics brothers. I know what a home victory feels like.”
Toni Eggert (GER / Olympic bronze medallist in 2018, World Champion in 2017 and 2019)
“We broke our sled and sustained injuries last weekend in Lillehammer. We also had some issues in training here and we crashed on our final practice run. We had the potential to be much further up the leaderboard but sadly we made mistakes on both runs.”
