Lake Placid (pps) Anne Abernathy of the Virgin Islands qualified for her sixth Olympic Games in Torino 2006. Though the now 52-year-old failed to qualify for all five World Cup events held this season, she could gained one of the coveted Olympic starting places. Anne Abernathy started with luge at the age of 29 and competed in the 1988, 1992, 1994, 1998 and 2002 Winter Games. In the winter of 2003-2004 the self-styled “Grandma Luge“ finished third respectively at the Nations’ Cups at Koenigssee and Altenberg. Her best result in a World Cup event was 16th at Altenberg and 20th overall in 2003-04. At the 2002 Olympic Winter Games in Salt Lake City Anne Abernathy finished in 26th position.
