Park City (pps) Armin Zoeggeler is stringing together one victory after the other. At the Viessmann Luge World Cup in Park City in the US state of Utah the 36 year-old already earned his third successive win. The track record of the two-time Olympic and five-time World champion thus boasts a total of 52 victories.
On the 2002 Olympic luge track – this is where Zoeggeler earned his first Olympic gold medal – the luger from South Tyrol clearly defeated Germany’s Andi Langenhan (0.252 seconds behind). This is the best result this season for the 2008 World bronze medallist who posted two victories in the Viessmann Luge World Cup so far. Russia’s Viktor Kneyb finished in third position (0.357 seconds behind), thus confirming his second place in Calgary last week.
Olympic champion Felix Loch of Germany, exactly half a second slower than Zoeggeler, finished on fourth position followed by Austria’s Wolfgang Kindl (0.537 seconds behind) who celebrated his best result in the Viessmann Luge World Cup with a fifth place. So far, the 2008 junior World champion only had two sixth places to his credit.
Armin Zoeggeler, who intends to continue his career until at least the 2011-2012 season, clearly leads the overall World Cup rankings with 370 points to his credit and a gap of 80 points to runner-up Felix Loch (290) of Germany. David Moeller (GER / 264) who finished in eleventh position in Park City, holds third place.
Quotes
Armin Zöggeler (ITA / 2002 and 2006 Olympic champion as well as five-time World champion)
“My first run was almost picture-perfect. But then I lacked focus in the second and thus I made some tiny mistakes. I now have a comfortable lead in the overall World Cup and this is why the overall victory seems to be a real goal this season. I plan to continue until the 2011-2012 season. And then I’ll decided from year to year.”
Andi Langenhan (GER / 2008 World bronze medallist and Olympic fifth-placed)
“I’m happy that I’ve finally been able to turn my good shape into a good performance. I’ve had a good sled and good stability. This is the best gift ahead of the Christmas holidays.”
Viktor Kneyb (RUS / 2007 World Championship eighth-placed)
“I’m happy to have made it onto the podium for the second time this season. But now we’ll have three competitions on German luge tracks so it will be difficult for me to repeat such a good performance.”
