Rome (pps) It is a great honor for Armin Zoeggeler: The two-time Olympic Champion was selected by the National Olympic Committee of Italy (CONI) to carry Italy’s flag at the Opening Ceremony of the Olympic Winter Games in Sochi, Russia, on February 7. This decision was announced by CONI-President Giovanni Malagò in Rome. The 39-year-old from South Tyrol is looking forward to his sixth Olympic Games. Apart from the two gold medals he won at the Olympic Games in Salt Lake City (USA) in 2002 and in Turin (ITA) in 2006, he won a silver medal in Nagano (Japan / 1998) as well as two bronze medals in Lillehammer (NOR / 1994) and Vancouver (CAN / 2010). With six World Championship titles to his name Zoeggeler is moreover record World Champion of the International Luge Federation (FIL). Additionally, the Italian athlete won 10 overall Viessmann Luge World Cup titles. Zoeggeler, who will celebrate his 40th birthday on January 4, 2014, won 55 individual World Cup events and captured 99 podium finishes - as many as no other luger - in the Viessmann Luge World Cup series.
