Austria Team Relay World Champion

Team Austria

Koenigssee (FIL) Surprise at the end of the 50th FIL Luge World Championships at Koenigssee: Austria secured the title in the Team Relay event with Madeleine Egle, David Gleirscher as well as Thomas Steu and Lorenz Koller ahead of Germany and Latvia.
"The gold medal at the end was once again the crowning glory", the Austrian head coach René Friedl was pleased, "all in all it was a very successful weekend, from that point of view we are absolutely satisfied and super happy." Overall World Cup winner Thomas Steu was also more than satisfied with the team gold, after the two doubles decisions in which he and his doubles partner Lorenz Koller had come away empty-handed: "After it wasn't enough in the individual disciplines, we are all the happier about the gold in the team relay." However, Olympic Champion David Gleirscher, who had already won two bronze medals, was very proud: "It was a great weekend for me to win three bronze medals. No one would have thought that I could leave Königssee with three medals."

Team Germany

After the two single sleds with World Champion Julia Taubitz and Felix Loch, the German team was on course for gold with a lead of more than half a second. But World Champions Toni Eggert and Sascha Benecken, of all people, made a mistake that cost them momentum and a lot of time. "Small mistakes are enough, then it's only silver," said German head coach Norbert Loch. At the finish they were 0.038 seconds behind the Austrian quartet.

Third place in the Team Relay World Championships went to the team from Latvia with Kendijja Aparjode, Arturs Darznieks and the brothers Andris and Juris Sics, who thus won their third bronze medal in three days at the World Championships in Koenigssee.
