Canada’s luge team “puts a Lid on it”

Calgary (RWH)  Canada’s luge team is doing its bit for a good cause. The host team of the Viessmann World Cup in Calgary this Friday and Saturday will be promoting the use of crash helmets in sport, as part of a nationwide campaign to prevent serious head and brain injuries. The campaign, which has just been launched at a press conference, is being organised in conjunction with the Helmets for Heroes charity, and is known by the catchy title of “Put a Lid on It”.

Ahead of the winter season, seven members of the Canadian squad, Alex Gough, Ariane Jones, Kim McRae, John Fennel, Mitch Malyk and the doubles pairing of Tristan Walker and Justin Snith, teamed up with children who have overcome serious brain injuries to design unique helmets in conjunction with local artists. The project resulted in seven different helmets, all of which carry a strong message and are unique to the athlete, designer and artist. The Canadian team will wear the helmets at all Viessmann World Cups until the end of the season, and at the International Luge Federation (FIL) World Championships, in order to promote the “Put a Lid on It” message around the world.
