(ck) - In 2014 Sochi (RUS) will host the Olympic Winter Games, in 2015 the 20th FIL World Championships on Natural Track will be held at the Black Sea, for the first time ever in Russia. Josef Ploner, chief of the FIL Technical Commission and in charge of building natural luge tracks, visited Sochi in June 2011 and came back in good spirits: “The terrain is perfect, the middle part does not need more than a few earth banks. Eight to ten days of work with a caterpillar should be sufficient to adjust the terrain.” The track, called “Gorna Carrousel” is located within a skiing area, about 5 kilometres away from the artificial track venue, where constructions for the Olympic Winter Games are underway. According to Ploner the site resembles the track in Grande Prairie (CAN) where the 2007 World Championships were held and where also a skiing lift is being used for the transport uphill. “In future the skiing hill will be expanded and their water supplies for making snow can also be used for the track”, said Ploner. He also reported that during his first visit an agreement with the owners of the track has been made and the project WCH 2015 is on track. Ploner will revisit Sochi in October 2011. The natural track luge community will get the first chance to test the new track in a world cup race in the season 2012/13.
