Continental Cup Youth A on January 23 in Winterberg: Germany with 22 athletes will be the largest team in the event

Winterberg (FIL/20 Jan 2023) The Continental Cup of the luge youth, which has been newly created for the 2022/23 season, will make its first stop at the VELTINS EisArena in Winterberg. The races in the singles and doubles of the young men and women will take place on Monday, January 23, 2023.
The official training days for the Continental Cup are scheduled for Saturday, January 21 and Sunday, January 22. In the VELTINS EisArena, 22 sleds will compete in the singles of the male youth, and 19 in the female youth.
Six sleds each are registered for the two doubles competitions. With 22 athletes, Germany has the largest contingent, followed by Austria with 14. Among others, Laura Koch from BSC Winterberg and Melina Hänsch (BRC Hallenberg), two local heroes, are also registered in the German contingent.
The Continental Cup is jointly organized by the Winterberg Sports Center (SZW) and the BRC Hallenberg local club.
In this new World Cup series for athletes in the Youth A age group, young people between the ages of 15 and 18 compete. Previously, the Youth A World Cup was held as part of the Junior World Cups. "The starting fields were very large, which was one reason for the creation of an independent World Cup series for the A youth," emphasized Hans-Jürgen Köhne, chairman of the FIL Commission for Development and Youth.
A broader reason for the creation of the separate platform is the offer of a qualification framework for the 2024 Winter Youth Olympic Games in Gangwon (South Korea). The competitions from January 19 to February 1, 2024, will be held mainly on the sports venues created for the 2018 Winter Olympics in PyeongChang. The luge, bobsleigh and skeleton competitions will be held at the Olympic Sliding Center in PyeongChang.
