Sochi (RWH) Double victory for Dajana Eitberger: the 24-year-old German luger has celebrated not only her first win in a Viessmann World Cup, but also victory in the 46th European Championships organised by the International Luge Federation (FIL). In the final race of the season on the Olympic track in Sochi, Russia, Eitberger relegated her teammate Natalie Geisenberger and Tatiana Ivanova of Russia down to second and third. The German athlete’s best result to date had been bronze in the European Championships during the Olympic winter. Tatiana Ivanova, also 24, was in the lead after the first heat, but ended up with bronze after the second run. The Russian, who has two European Championship titles and two World Championship bronzes to her name, only came seventh on her home track during the Olympics last year, a bitter disappointment. Olympic Champion Natalie Geisenberger was denied a golden finale to what has been a near-to-perfect season. After winning her second World Championship title and her third victory in succession in the overall Viessmann World Cup, the 27-year-old German had to make do with silver in the final race of the season. Geisenberger consolidated her lead in the overall World Cup rankings and ends the season with 1080 points. She is followed by Eitberger with 851 and Germany’s Tatjana Hüfner, who came fifth in Sochi, with 727 points.
