Paramonovo (pps) The “big winners” of the 2010 European Championships in Sigulda, Latvia, were the lugers from Russia and Austria. With the Olympic Games in Vancouver only some weeks later, German and Italy had only entered those lugers not qualified for the Olympics. Russia’s Albert Demchenko won the men’s singles ahead of Wolfgang Kindl and Daniel Pfister (both of Austria). Demchenko’s compatriot, Tatiana Ivanova, took the podium’s top spot in the women’s singles ahead of Corinna Martini (Germany) and Nina Reithmayer (Austria). The gold and bronze medals in the doubles, too, went to Austria with the teams of Wolfgang and Andreas Linger as well as Tobias and Markus Schiegl. Germany’s Tobias Wendl-Tobias Arlt, who did not qualify for the 2010 Olympic Games, earned the silver medal. Host Latvia won gold in the Team Relay; Martins Rubenis (men’s singles) and Andris Sics-Juris Sics (doubles) narrowly failed to claim a medal as they finished in fourth position. Silver in the Team Relay event went to Austria ahead of Germany on third place.
