Calgary (pps) Russia’s Albert Demtschenko raced at the Viessmann Luge World Cup in Calgary from the 14th place after the first run to the victory. Celebrating his second success of the Olympic season he finished in a total time of one minute 30,468 second and took the lead in the overall standings with 340 points followed by Austria’s Markus Kleinheinz (249) and Armin Zöggeler (244) from Italy. USA’s Tony Benshoof, who was in the lead together with Zöggeler, was disqualified due to overweight.
Three-time Olympic Champion Hackl (1:30,619) realized an unbelievable second place after his injury and operation in summer. Third place went to his team-mate David Möller (1:30,658).
The teams from USA, Austria and Italy run a protest because of the heavy winds. But the jury decided that the race was correct. Quotes Albert Demtschenko (Overall Winner 2004/2005) „Unbelievable, I’ve thought to win this race after the first run. There was so heavy wind in the first run, so I made a mistake before the Kreisel. Georg Hackl (Three-time Olympic Champion) „The early starting number was probably an advantage for me. Even the start here in Calgary is good for bad starters like me. Now I’m flying home to continue my therapy. Next year I’m going to attack in the world Cup and tray to qualify for the Olympics. David Möller (World Champion 2004) „I hope I will be better the rest of the season than always on third place. But after all I’m satisfied, even I thought I could get second place. Demtschenko made an unbelievable second run. “
