Winterberg (RWH) After three races without victory, Toni Eggert and Sascha Benecken of Germany are back at the top with a win in the Winterberg Viessmann World Cup. After their fourth victory of the season and their ninth ever World Cup win, the two-times World Champions have extended their lead to 70 points in the overall standings. Germany’s Olympic Champions Tobias Wendl and Tobias Arlt, who won the last three races in succession, came second on the track in the Hochsauerland region. Third place went to Andris and Juris Sics of Latvia. Eggert-Benecken (755 points) and Wendl-Arlt (685) are followed in the overall Viessmann World Cup rankings by Sics-Sics (469), who took Olympic silver in 2014 and bronze in 2010, and also won bronze with the relay team at Sochi 2014. The seventh round in the Viessmann World Cup will be held next weekend (31 January to 1 February 2015) in Lillehammer, Norway and can be seen as the final rehearsal for the International Luge Federation’s 45th World Championships two weeks later in the Latvian town of Sigulda (14–15 February 2015). Quotes Toni Eggert (GER / 2012 and 2013 World Championship silver medallist) “I already had a grin on my face at the final corner, because I felt that we were going to win this race. If we make two optimum runs at the World Championships in Sigulda in two weeks’ time, we’ll be in with the top teams. What place we actually make there remains to be seen.” Tobias Arlt (2014 Olympic Champion and 2013 World Champion) “The small error we made at the start of the first run is what made the difference.” Andris Sics (LAT / 2014 Olympic bronze medallist and 2010 Olympic silver medallist) “We like the track in Winterberg, and it’s been really well prepared this year. This third place is great motivation for us for the World Championships on our own track.”
