Eggert/Benecken claim fifth overall Viessmann World Cup victory

Königssee (RWH) Doubles luge pairing Toni Eggert and Sascha Benecken have clinched their fifth overall victory in the Viessmann World Cup. In a thrilling duel, the three-time World Champions prevailed over perennial rivals Tobias Wendl and Tobias Arlt (Olympic Champions in 2014 and 2018), both at the Viessmann World Cup in Königssee and in the overall standings. The Latvian pairing of Andris Sics and Yuri Sics finished third in Königssee and in the overall classification.
After twelve events in the Viessmann World Cup and the BMW Sprint World Cup, Eggert/Benecken have 872 points ahead of Wendl/Arlt on 847 points and Sics/Sics in third with 720 points. The two German duos have dominated the overall standings in doubles luge for the best part of a decade, with the exception of 2012 when Austria’s Andreas and Wolfgang Linger took victory.
Quotes
Toni Eggert (GER / World Champion 2017, 2019 and 2020, Olympic bronze medallist 2018)
“It has been an incredibly exciting season. There have been winter seasons where we’ve had a big points cushion going into the last round. Our rivals have become stronger. We had to prove our nerve a couple of times this season – at the World Championships in Sochi and here at the season finale.”
Tobias Wendl (GER / Olympic Champion in 2014 and 2018, Team Relay Olympic Champion in 2014 and 2018, three-time World Champion)
“Credit where credit is due, Toni and Sascha were just better today. We need to analyse where we can improve. One thing is clear – not our starts!”
Andris Sics (LAT / Olympic silver medallist in 2010, Olympic bronze medallist in 2014, Olympic bronze medallist in Team Relay 2014)
“It has been a good season. We could have done better at the World Championships. We are like wine – we get better with age.”
