Eggert/Benecken clinch 19th Viessmann World Cup victory

Doppelsitzer Lake Placid

Lake Placid (RWH) It is business as usual in the doubles competition as Toni Eggert/Sascha Benecken (GER) continue to rack up one victory after another at the start of the current Viessmann World Cup season, just as they did last year. Following on from their double win in Winterberg last weekend, the 2013 and 2016 European Champions also took victory at the the 3rd Viessmann World Cup in Lake Placid, NY, USA. This victory on the taxing artificial ice track on Mount Van Hoevenberg is the 19th win of the duo’s career.

The US pairing of Matt Mortensen/Jayson Terdiman made the most of their home advantage to take second, their best World Cup result to date as a duo. Terdiman previously took third in Winterberg, Germany, back in December 2010 with his then partner Chris Niccum. Third place at the Viessmann World Cup in Lake Placid went to Robin Geueke/David Gamm (GER), who confirmed that their results at last weekend’s season opener in Hochsauerland, where they finished second and third (in the sprint), were no fluke.

After three of twelve events, Eggert/Benecken lead the overall classification with the perfect score of 300 points ahead of Geueke/Gamm on 225, and the defending title-holders Tobias Wendl/Tobias Arlt (GER/197), who came home eighth in Lake Placid.

Quotes

Toni Eggert (GER / 2013 and 2016 European Champion, World Championship silver medallist in 2016)

“Last year we made a solid start to the season but threw away overall victory in the World Cup by crashing twice. Our goal now has to be to eliminate any mistakes. That is the key to success. If we manage that, there’s no reason why we can’t grab another World Championship win.”

Jayson Terdiman (USA / fifth in the Sprint World Championships in 2016)

“There were six years between by first and second podium finishes. Matt and I have worked hard to get to this level. The rumour that our sled comes from Germany is true. I have good contacts. So if you look at it like that, there were actually three German sleds on the podium!”

David Gamm (GER / fourth in the 2016 World Championships)

“Three podiums in three races is really amazing. And it’s great to do it on such a tricky track and against such strong opposition. We’ve learned from our mistakes in terms of sled construction, athletic training, and driving.”
