Calgary (RWH) Toni Eggert and Sascha Benecken of Germany have continued their winning streak with their fourth victory of the season in the Canadian city of Calgary. The duo, who came second in the 2012 and 2013 World Championships, remain unbeaten in the post-Olympic winter, and celebrate their eighth ever first in a Viessmann World Cup. Second place went to Olympic Champions Tobias Wendl and Tobias Arlt of Germany, and Canada’s Tristan Walker and Justin Snith made their first ever podium appearance in their home town with a third. Walker-Snith were in the top three for the first time in the 2013/2014 Olympic winter, when they came third in the Königssee World Cup. Eggert-Benecken continue to head the Viessmann World Cup rankings with the best possible score of 400 points, and could earn more in the FIL Sprint World Cup which closes the Calgary competitions on Saturday. Wendl-Arlt are second with 300 points, and Austria’s team of Peter Penz and Georg Fischler are third with 264 points after a ninth place in Calgary. The fourth round of the Viessmann World Cup will be fought out after the Christmas break on the labyrinthine curves of the Königssee ice track in Germany from 3 4 January 2015. The world’s oldest artificial track will also be hosting the 46th World Championships organised by the International Luge Federation (FIL) in 2016. Quotes Toni Eggert (GER, 2012 and 2013 World Championship silver medallist) “This is the result of all the work we put in in the summer. We’re still working on our material, and our runs aren’t perfect, either. There’s still room for improvement there.” Tobias Wendl (GER, 2014 Olympic Champion and 2013 World Champion) “Two German doubles in first and second can only be good, and the gap between us and Eggert-Benecken is closing all the time. Our new sled is running better and better. And now it’s time we got back home, where we can do some fine tuning.” Justin Walker (CAN, placed fourth at the Olympics) “It’s great to go into the Christmas break with a third place. After our fourth at Sochi we were hoping for some podium appearances this season. You can’t plan it, but you can hope. So it’s good to have done it already.”
