Eggert/Benecken extend World Cup lead with third win of the season

Calgary (RWH)  Toni Eggert/Sascha Benecken from Germany have clinched their third victory of the season, this time in Calgary, Canada, to further extend their lead in the Viessmann World Cup standings. The defending champions took their 13th individual career win to push the Austrian duo of Peter Penz/Georg Fischler into second place on the 1988 Olympic track. This podium finish at Canada Olympic Park (COP) was the fourth of the season for the 2015 World Championship runners-up.  The Olympic and World Champions Tobias Wendl/Tobias Arlt claimed third after setting the fastest time on the second run to make up for a mistake on their first descent.

After five of twelve races, Eggert/Benecken lead the overall standings on 455 points, with a clear margin over Penz/Fischler (385) and Wendl/Arlt (367).

The Viessmann World Cup will take a Christmas break following the BMW Sprint World Cup on Saturday (December 19, 2015) in Calgary. The 5th Viessmann World Cup will be held on January 9-10, 2016 in Sigulda, Latvia, which hosted the 45th International Luge Federation (FIL) World Championships in 2015.

Quotes

Toni Eggert (GER, overall winner of the Viessmann Luge World Cup 2014/15 and World Championship runner-up in 2012 and 2013)

“We are delighted with the result. In terms of the runs themselves, our second attempt could have been better, but overall we did pretty well. And importantly we have extended our World Cup lead.”

Peter Penz (AUT, 2015 World Championship runner-up)

“We’re mega happy. The season has been great so far. We finally managed two good runs after a rough ride in Park City last week. We were just a tenth of a second behind the winner this time. We need to keep working and see how things progress from race to race. One of our season objectives is to win a World Cup event.”

Tobias Wendl (GER, Olympic Champion 2014, World Champion 2013 and 2015)

“We messed up our first run so we are pretty happy with third place. We set the fastest time on the second run, so we showed what we are capable of. In general we’re pretty disappointed, because everything went so well in the final training session. We had more to give.”
