Lake Placid (RWH) Toni Eggert and Sascha Benecken from Germany, defending doubles champions in the Viessmann Luge World Cup, have notched up twelve wins. The two-time World Championship silver medallists followed up their victory at the season opener in Innsbruck, Austria, by winning the second race in the Viessmann World Cup in Lake Placid, NY, to take the twelfth race victory of their career.

Eggert/Benecken, who returned from the Olympics without a medal, relegated Austrian sliders Peter Penz/Georg Fischler to second place on the Mount Van Hoevenberg ice track, as they did last week. Latvian pairing Andris Sics/Juris Sics, who took Olympic silver in 2010 and bronze in 2014, secured third.

Germans Tobias Wendl/Tobias Arlt, the Olympic Champions and two-time World Champions, dropped back from second place at half-time to finish eighth. Their team-mates David Geueke/Robin Gamm achieved the best finish of their career in fourth, beating their previous best result of two seventh places.

 Quotes

Toni Eggert (GER, overall winner of the Viessmann Luge World Cup 2014/15 and World Championship runner-up in 2012 and 2013)

“It’s been a great start to the season. Although we have a slight cushion over Wendl/Arlt, nothing has been decided yet. Things will really hot up in the battle for overall World Cup victory.”

Eggert-Benecken

Peter Penz (AUT, 2015 World Championship runner-up)

“It’s great to have taken two second places. That’s got the winter off to a good start. And Park City is up next. We have fond memories of the track as we took our first World Cup victory there.”

Andris Sics (LAT / Olympic silver in 2010 and Olympic bronze in 2014)

“A podium finish is always good, although we weren’t particularly happy with our second run. But third is a good result.”
