Egle/Kipp cruise to two track records and the crystal globe
9th EBERSPAECHER Luge World Cup 2026
Altenberg (FIL/07 Mar 2026) Selina Egle and Lara Kipp demonstrated their exceptional position in the EBERSPAECHER Luge World Cup once again at the final race of the season in Altenberg. The two Austrians, who had already secured the overall World Cup title (795 points) last weekend, set track records in both runs. After 41.939 seconds in run one, they followed up with 41.844 seconds. “We were a little more relaxed today,” admitted front woman Egle, “We knew we had the title in the bag.” The old record had been held by Anda Upite and Zane Kaluma (Latvia) since the 2024 World Championships with a time of 42.334 seconds.
With a total time of 1:23.873 minutes, they relegated Dajana Eitberger and Magdalena Matschina to second place, 0.151 seconds behind. For a short time, the latter still held the track record with 41.886 seconds. The two Germans also took second place in the overall World Cup with 653 points. For 35-year-old Eitberger, this race was particularly emotional as it marked the end of her career. “It couldn't have gone any better; it's the perfect time after 25 years of competitive sport,” said Eitberger. “Yesterday in the shower, it dawned on me that this would be our last dance.” A career in which she won three Olympic medals, among others: gold with the relay team a few weeks ago in Cortina and two silver medals – in 2026 in the doubles with Magdalena Matschina and in 2018 in the singles. Because both Eitberger and Matschina were in tears of joy, Selina Egle hugged her two competitors before the medal ceremony and comforted them.
After the second-fastest time with an interim track record of 42.043 seconds, Marta Robezniece/Kitija Bogdanova (Latvia) fell back to third place, 0.282 seconds behind. Fourth place went to Olympic champions Andrea Vötter and Marion Oberhofer (Italy/0.342 seconds behind) ahead of Elisa-Marie Storch/Pauline Patz (Germany/0.599) and Anda Upite/Madara Pavlova (Latvia/0.628).
Jessica Degenhardt and Cheyenne Rosenthal, who are third in the World Cup standings with 524 points, missed their second race of the season after a crash in training. Degenhardt injured her foot and Rosenthal suffered bruised ribs.
