Altenberg (RWH) Erin Hamlin of the USA, Germany’s Felix Loch and his teammates Toni Eggert and Sascha Benecken have won the third and last race of the season in the Sprint World Cup organised by the International Luge Federation (FIL) in Altenberg, Germany. The overall winners of the three events in Innsbruck-Igls, Calgary and Altenberg are all from Germany: Natalie Geisenberger, Andi Langenhan and Eggert–Benecken. On the Altenberg artificial track, Olympic bronze medallist Erin Hamlin had a lead of 0.145 seconds on Dajana Eitberger of Germany, who came second. Third place went to Natalie Geisenberger, who had the best overall time in the three FIL Sprint World Cups and therefore came first in the FIL Sprint World Cup rankings. Geisenberger also leads in the overall rankings for the Viessmann World Cup and goes to the final race of the season in Sochi next weekend, 28 February and 1 March 2015, with 995 points. In the men’s singles, Felix Loch came first ahead of Canada’s Sam Edney and Latvia’s Inars Kivlenieks. Andi Langenhan is the overall winner of the FIL Sprint World Cup. In the overall Viessmann World Cup rankings, Loch is in the lead with 905 points, followed by Langenhan with 585 points and Austria’s World Championship bronze medallist Wolfgang Kindl with 571. Eggert–Benecken won the doubles sprint in Altenberg, extending their lead in the overall World Cup rankings to 70 points before the final race of the season next weekend on the Olympic track in Sochi. Tobias Wendl and Tobias Arlt of Germany had to make do with third place in the FIL Sprint World Cup behind Latvia’s Andris and Juris Sics. The FIL Sprint World Cup is decided in just one run. Athletes use the traditional flying start and the clock starts at the 100-metre mark after the start block. Only the lugers who came in the top fifteen in the previous World Cup are entitled to compete.
