Oberhof (pps) Germany’s Toni Eggert-Sascha Benecken have put an end to the series of Viessmann Luge World Cup victories of compatriots Tobias Wendl-Tobias Arlt. On their home track in Oberhof they claimed their first big title at the 44th European Championships of the International Luge Federation (FIL), carried out simultaneously. Austria’s Peter Penz-Georg Fischler claimed the bronze medal.
Thanks to their second individual victory in the Viessmann Luge World Cup, Eggert-Benecken snapped the string of victories of Wendl-Arlt who won all previous five World Cup races in the pre-Olympic winter. With a total of five successive World Cup victories to their credit Wendl-Arlt are record-holders together with Stefan Krauße-Jan Behrendt of Germany. The 1998 Olympic Champions Krauße-Behrendt strung together five successive Viessmann Luge World Cup victories in the 1995-1996 season.
With the maximum possible score of 585 points Wendl-Arlt are at the top of the overall rankings, ahead of Eggert-Benecken (467) and Penz-Fischler on second and third place, respectively.
Winterberg will host the seventh stop of the Viessmann Luge World Cup next weekend (January 19.-20, 2013).
