Königssee (pps) The German Team doctor, Dr. Jochen Wagner, was awarded the International Luge Federation’s (FIL) Fair-Play-Award at the Viessmann World Cup in Königssee. With this award, the FIL honoured Dr. Wagner’s “selfless dedication” during the treatment and rehabilitation of the seriously injured athlete Ewelina Staszulonek from Poland”, which was stated as the reason. The proposal to award the Fair-Play-Award was put forward by the Polish National Federation.
During the International Training Week in the autumn of 2007 for the European Championships 2008 in Cesana, Ewelina Staszulonek suffered a compound fracture of her left leg and had to be operated on many times. At times, there was even a threat of having to amputate. Dr. Wagner treated the now 24 year old student the whole time and even enabled treatment by specialists in Munich.
It is a medical wonder that Ewelina Staszulonek is now without pain and can continue with her sport. During the World Championships 2009 in Lake Placid she passed the finish line as 13th and in the total ranking of the Viessmann World Cup Ewelina Staszulonek made an outstanding ninth place. Her best result thereby was 6th place in Königssee.
The athletes of the Polish National Federation train together with the German Bobsleigh (BSD) within the FIL Partner Program and therefore benefit from the medical assistance of Dr. Jochen Wagner as the head of the German National Team.
The year before, Jürgen Oberthanner, the physiotherapist of the Austrian Team was awarded the FIL Fair-Play-Trophy as a result of his treating Canadian Sarah Podorieszach’s injuries after a crash in Altenberg.
