Felix Loch races through the Oberhof ice track more perfectly than Jonas Müller
7th EBERSPAECHER Luge World Cup in Oberhof (GER)
Oberhof (FIL/13 Jan 2026) After this performance at the EBERSPAECHER Luge World Cup in Oberhof, Felix Loch is the big favorite for gold at the Olympic Games in Milan-Cortina d'Ampezzo. The 36-year-old German won in 1:24.673, skiing fastest in both runs on the 1065-meter-long ice track. “I've always loved being in Oberhof,” said the three-time Olympic champion after his victory on the track where he won the first of his 14 World Championship titles in 2008. It was his 56th World Cup victory, leaving him just one behind record holder Armin Zöggeler (Italy). With his sights set on second-placed Austrian Jonas Müller, who triumphed in Oberhof a week ago with a start and track record. “The basis today was two great starts,” explained Loch. In contrast to the previous week, he was also the best at the bar twice. Looking ahead to the Olympic decision, the German said: “It's definitely going to be extremely close. I have a great battle with Jonas, we get on really well.”
Müller was only 0.089 seconds behind. “If you want to beat Felix, you simply need two perfect runs,” said the 30-year-old, “my runs weren't perfect.” In the first run, he made small mistakes between turns seven and eight and turn twelve, and in the second run, he had a slight collision with the barrier before turn twelve. “But I'm still satisfied.” His equipment gives him confidence. “The speed is right,” he explained. Nevertheless, he lost the lead in the overall World Cup standings. Loch has 616 points, Müller one less.
Although Max Langenahn was able to race on his home track, the world champion made more mistakes than Loch and Müller, who finished ahead of him. “In Oberhof, you have to ski cleanly up to turn eleven, after that you can afford to make some mistakes,” he explained. “I made too many small mistakes too far up the course.” The result: third place, 0.321 seconds behind.
Kristers Aparjods is getting better and better. The Latvian finished fourth, 0.387 seconds behind. Behind him were the two Austrians Nico Gleirscher (0.519 seconds behind) and Wolfgang Kindl (0.658 seconds behind).
