Koenigssee (pps) The German doubles team of Tobias Wendl-Tobias Arlt started the New Year as they ended the last: The current World Champions claimed their fifth season victory at the Viessmann Luge World Cup on their “home track” in Koenigssee. Earning their 22nd career victory, the local heroes defeated compatriots Toni Eggert-Sascha Benecken to second place. The Canadian doubles team of Tristan Walker-Justin Snith earned their very first podium finish when they claimed a third place.
After a crash in the first run Austria’s Andreas Linger-Wolfgang Linger, two-time Olympic and three-time World Champions, had to withdraw. Fortunately they were uninjured.
Wendl-Arlt are clearly heading the overall standings with 585 points to their credit. Eggert-Benecken (445 points) are in second place ahead of Austria’s Peter Penz-Georg Fischler (359 points) who claimed a fourth place finish in Koenigssee.
Quotes
Tobias Wendl (GER / 2013 World Champion, overall Viessmann Luge World Cup winner in 2010-2011 and 2012-2013)
“We’ve made this mistake in the first run already at the start. And we were really annoyed. It was a difficult race under these conditions.”
Ton Eggert (GER / 2013 European Champion, silver medalist at the 2012 and 2013 World Championships)
“Oh well, even with a mistake Wendl-Arlt claim the victory with such a big winning margin. A really good job! We are happy with our second place finish – we’ve had two nice runs.”
Tristan Walker (CAN / fourth place finish at the World Championships)
“This is the biggest success of our career. Koenigssee always serves as our basis whenever we’re in Europe. We practice a lot here and we know our way around. You could even say that Koenigssee is a kind of home event for us Canadians.”
