Lake Placid once again venue for FIL Luge World Championships 2029 –
Alpine luge events on natural track also confirmed

Tampere (June 19, 2025) The World Congress of the International Luge Federation (FIL) in Tampere (Finland) announced on June 19, 2025, the venues for numerous World and European Championships through 2029. The focus is on the decision to award the 2029 FIL Luge World Championships to Lake Placid (New York, USA) – exactly 20 years after the last World Championships at Mount Van Hoevenberg.
Lake Placid 2029 – 100 years of Olympic spirit
After 1983 and 2009, Lake Placid will host the FIL World Championships for the third time. The modern artificial ice track in the traditional Olympic venue has been modernized several times and offers outstanding conditions for athletes and fans.
"Lake Placid is a place with Olympic spirit, great experience, and a passionate luge community. The return of the World Championships to the USA is a strong signal for the global development of our sport,“ emphasized FIL President Einars Fogelis.
Scott Riewald, CEO of USA Luge, added: ”In 2029, we will celebrate 50 years of USA Luge – 20 years after the last World Championships here. Our experience, innovative spirit, and commitment to sustainability make Lake Placid the ideal host."
The president of ORDA, Olympic luge athlete Ashley Walden, also underscored the importance of the extensive investments in infrastructure: “We are currently renovating the facilities from the 1980 Olympic Games – including a new start house for women and doubles, sustainable cooling systems, state-of-the-art video, lighting, and timing technology, and much more.”
Emily Fischnaller, a world-class athlete from the USA, summed it up emotionally: “Lake Placid is my home – and it means everything to me that the World Championships will be held right here.”

Natural Track World Championships 2027
The 2027 Natural Track World Championships – renamed the “Alpine Luge World Championships” at today's congress in Finland – will be held together with the Artificial Track World Championships in Innsbruck-Igls, Austria. Part of the historic 1964 Olympic track will be used for the natural track, with the aim of making the most of the synergies between the two disciplines.
FIL Junior Championships and Europeans:
- 2026 – Junior World Championships on artificial track: Altenberg (GER) An update on the organization was presented by Jens Morgenstein and Ralf Mende
- The Alpine Luge European Championships 2026 on natural track will be held in Laas, Italy.
- 2026 – Alpine Luge Junior World Championships on natural track: Mariazell (AUT)
- 2028 Junior Worlds – Artificial track: Lillehammer (NOR) Norway's Luge Federation impressed with a sustainable concept, a professional event team, and the promise of “athlete-centered championships as a platform for development, friendship, and inspiration.”
- 2029 Junior Worlds – Artificial track: Bludenz (AUT) The western Austrian town in the province of Vorarlberg will host the FIL Junior World Championships.
