25 years of UVEX safety helmets in luge
Berchtesgaden (pps) The President of the International Luge Federation (FIL), Josef Fendt of Berchtesgaden, has expressed his appreciation of the 25-year long partnership with UVEX, manufacturer of safety helmets. “I hope that this long-standing and excellent partnership with UVEX will continue to last a long time. I would like to express my gratitude for this cooperation,” said Fendt.
Since 1987 UVEX provides FIL luge athletes with safety helmets. The partnership started on Fendt’s initiative, at that time FIL Vice President Sports. “Some of us still remember the helmets of the 1970s and 1980s – they rather resembled bathing caps without any safety functions,” Fendt recalled. “But in my role as FIL Vice President I didn’t want to put up with the situation any longer. UVEX was prepared to develop a new and light-weight safety helmet together with us… a safety helmet that truly deserves the name.”
However, the introduction of the new safety helmet met some resistance, Fendt recalled. This is why the FIL President explicitly thanked Walter Plaikner, Chairman of the Technical Commission, for his assistance during the development of such an important protection for the athletes.
