FIL reserves right to issue wild-card spots at 2018 Olympics

PyeongChang Ringe

Berchtesgaden (RWH): The International Luge Federation (FIL) is entitled to award eight wild-card spaces as part of the qualification process for the 2018 Winter Olympics in the Korean city of PyeongChang (9 to 25 February 2018). This special rule was created for athletes who fail to meet the qualification criteria but whose place in the Olympics would enable their country to compete in the team relay event at the Games. The FIL has referred to this wild-card rule in a new statement to the sport’s national bodies. However, in order to recieve a wild-card, athletes must meet the FIL's minimum requirements.

According to the agreement with the International Olympic Committee (IOC), a total of 110 luge athletes are permitted to compete in the Games, including the participants from the host country. This total comprises 40 men, 30 women and 20 doubles’ teams for the Winter Olympic Games. Each national body is entitled to enter a maximum of three men, three women, two doubles’ teams and one team relay squad. Put simply, the Olympic starting places will be allocated during the first five Viessmann World Cup events of the Olympic season.
