St. Leonhard (RWH) The Sports Director of the International Luge Federation (FIL), Maria Luise Rainer from Italy, has drawn positive conclusions from the pre-Olympic winter. “From a sporting point of view, all FIL competitions have offered equal and fair conditions for the athletes,” said Rainer at the hosting meeting in St. Leonhard near Salzburg (AUT).

During the 2016/2017 winter season, athletes from a total of 30 national teams took part in the Viessmann World Cup, the BMW Sprint World Cup and the Viessmann Team Relay World Cup presented by BMW, along with the 47th FIL World Championships.

14,378 runs were completed across all events on the sporting calendar. Rainer mentioned the team relay competition as a particular highlight. The record participation of 15 teams in the World Championships fulfilled a long-held desire of the FIL Presidential Board.

This is an indication of the positive development of luge as a sport in the national federations.

All organisers for the coming winter gather together at the FIL organisers’ meeting to prepare for the approaching season, to share experience and to pass on valuable information.
