Umhausen (ck) - In the women’s event, in the doubles race and in the team event the first places went to Russia. Ekatharina Lavrentjeva celebrated another win and prolonged her winning streak to a series of nine races. She has to beat her own record yet, which she set in the seasons 2004/05 through 2006/07 when she won eleven consecutive world cup races. But she should be good to continue winning soon, when she will have fully recovered from her cold. “I will go to the hotel now and just sleep”, she said after the race. “Two days ago I had fever and I have not been able to eat anything. Also, Umhausen is always a difficult track for me.” Happy about her best career result was runner up Melanie Schwarz (ITA): “I tried to stay calm, but of course there was pressure before my second run, facing my possibly best result ever. I am totally happy and all went well. On Friday I had to go through the qualification, but I am getting used to it”, said the South Tyrolian who now qualified for the one spare spot in the world cup – next to currently seeded Evelin Lanthaler and Greta Pinggera - the second time in a row. Evelin Lanthaler finished third and with her continuously good performance she is ranked second in the overall world cup – on place one behind Lavrentjeva – now and has great hopes for the upcoming world championships: “In Deutschnofen I finished on the podium for the first time and the junior world championships went smoothly, too”, said the Junior World Champion of 2010. Best Austrian was Christina Götschl who beat her team mate Tina Unterberger by one hundredths of a second. “After the training runs I never would have believed that I can do so well here”, said Götschl who already has been nominated for the world championships next week. “My preparation will mostly be mentally. My goal is a top ten result.” In the doubles category the reigning world champions Pavel Porshnev/Ivan Lazarev (RUS) seem to come in shape just in time to defend their title. “The first run was perfect, but in the second run we were on the brakes a bit too early in two or three curves, our performance is not stable yet”, analyzes Lazarev and adds: “Our equipment is much better now. This success here was the catalyser for the world championships.” Patrick Pigneter/Florian Clara (ITA), who had to settle for second rank in today’s race, expect a close finish in Deutschnofen: “The Russians did a good race and we made some small mistakes. It is going to be a nice battle and we will definitely take a higher risk there”, announced Florian Clara. Christian Schopf/Andreas Schopf (AUT) achieved their first podium finish in Umhausen and became third: “The first or second place was out of reach after the first run”, said Andreas Schopf. “We misjudged the conditions and made mistakes in preparing the sled, but in the second run we were right on spot”. In a close finish the Russian team with Ekatharina Lavrentjeva, Stanislav Koshniv and Pavel Porshnev/Ivan Lazarev also won the team event. They defeated Italy with Melanie Schwarz, Hannes Clara and Patrick Pigneter/Florian Clara, even though the doubles seized their opportunity for revenge and beat the Russians. However, Lavrentjeva’s time was good enough to secure the first place. Third finished team Austria with Christina Götschl, Thomas Kammerlander and Christian Schopf/Andreas Schopf ahead of Germany, Poland and Bulgaria. In the doubles’ Nations’ Cup Thomas Schopf/Andreas Schöpf (AUT) won ahead of Russia’s Pavel Silin/Iwan Rodin and Stanislav Kovshik/Ilya Tarasov. The FIL World Cup will take a little break now and continue in two weeks in Kindberg (AUT). Next week the luge community will meet in Deutschnofen (ITA) for the 19th FIL World Championships.
