Final run of Canada’s stand-out female luge athlete Alex Gough

Calgary (RWH) Canada’s most successful female luge athlete Alex Gough has marked the end of her track career as the forerunner for the Viessmann World Cup race in her home town of Calgary to mark The 31-year-old athlete won bronze in the women’s event at the Winter Olympic Games in PyeongChang (KOR) and also took home silver in the team relay race with Sam Edney and the doubles pairing of Tristan Walker/Justin Snith. In the outrun her long-time team-mate Sam Edney, who finished his career as well, was waiting for her to celebrate the final run.  

Alex Gough went down in the International Luge Federation’s (FIL) history books when – in the Russian city of Paramonovo on February 12, 2011 – she finally broke the German team’s run of 105 successive victories in the women’s event in the Viessmann World Cup. The Canadian athlete also won six medals at the FIL World Championships: two bronze medals (2011 and 2013) in the women’s event and four team medals (silver in 2013 and bronze in 2012, 2015 and 2016).
