First World Cup Demo Event at the Jenner in Schönau am Königssee

Alpine Luge Sprint Slalom at the end of February

From natural track luge to Alpine luge: after several successful test runs last year, a brand-new competition format will celebrate its premiere on 28 February 2026. With the first World Cup Demo Event in the Alpine Luge Sprint Slalom, the International Luge Federation (FIL) is ushering in a new era.

Schönau am Königssee (FIL/23 February 2026) – Unlike traditional luge racing in ice tracks or on iced natural tracks, Alpine luge is held on snow-covered slopes or ski pistes. Competitions take place on machine-made or natural snow. The courses are shorter, the speeds more moderate, and the sport far more spectator-friendly. Athletes race through a set slalom course similar to those used in skiing or snowboarding. The alpine lugers need a perfect line through the gates, a solid luge technique and fast reactions. The newly developed equipment – the Alpine luge – offers outstanding manoeuvrability on ice and snow.

Jenner as the ideal venue
The fact that this new format is making its debut at the Jenner is no coincidence: luge sport is deeply rooted in the region. As early as 1923 the Berchtesgaden Luge Club was founded, in 1926 the first “Bavarian Luge Championships” were held on the Vorderbrandstraße, and since 1969 the world’s first artificial ice track has been located in Schönau am Königssee.

“The very first Ski World Cup race ever was held at the Jenner on 5 January 1967 – a men’s slalom,” recalls Jennerbahn Managing Director Thomas Mühlthaler. “We are delighted that this young discipline is now celebrating its competition premiere here. With our Jennerhex toboggan run, the sport of luge is already firmly anchored at our mountain.”

Schedule and competition
The Alpine Luge Sprint Slalom for women and men will take place on the former ski slope above the mid-station of the Jenner cable car.
Start of first run: 11:00
Start of second run: 13:00
Spectators are very welcome along the entire course.

Family programme on race day: luge park and free Jenner cable car rides for children under 18
In addition to racing, Alpine Luge also supports a recreational, grassroots approach. Throughout race day, a FIL-designed luge park with various course elements will be set up at the Jenner cable car mid-station. It is suitable for children from primary-school age as well as adults. The equipment can be tried out free of charge to your heart’s content.

An open children’s race will also give young participants the chance to experience real competition while keeping the fun front and centre. Helmets are compulsory; rental helmets will be provided. Sturdy footwear and winter sports clothing are required. Registration for the children’s race takes place directly on site.
