Alex Gough takes first medal in the women’s singles for Canada
Cesana (pps) At the 42nd FIL World Championships of the International Luge Federation, FIL, in Cesana, Italy, a total of five nations have earned at least one medal. After the cancellation of the Team Relay Event due to technical problems, only three sets of medals were awarded.
Most successful nation – Germany with altogether four medals. The medal winners for Germany were Tatjana Huefner, who earned the World Championship title for the third time already, Felix Loch and Natalie Geisenberger (both silver) as well as Andi Langenhan (bronze).
Thanks to the now six-time World champion Armin Zoeggeler, who was made an honorary citizen of Cesana on Saturday (January 29, 2011), and the doubles’ with Christian Oberstolz-Patrick Gruber (silver), Italy collected two medals. Austria earned a gold medal thanks to two-time Olympic champions Andreas Linger-Wolfgang Linger.
Latvia’s doubles’ team with Olympic silver medalists Andris Sics-Juris Sics took bronze. And Alex Gough had to honor to earn the first World Championship medal in the women’s singles for Canada. In 1983 it was the former Czech luger Miroslav Zajonc who took the title in the men’s singles at the 1983 Worlds in Lake Placid.
