Lake Placid (pps) For the first time, six nations have earned at least one medal at the 41st World Championships of the International Luge Federation, FIL. This is why President Josef Fendt (Berchtesgaden/GER) drew a very positive conclusion. Bearing in mind that the luge federations of the USA, Germany, Italy, Austria, Latvia and the Ukraine have all earned at least one medal, Fendt said: “This mix of medals is a pleasure from an international point of view.” Fendt continued: “It clearly shows that the sport of luge is widespread.”
Having earned two gold and two silver medals, the German team proved to be the most successful federation at the World Championships. The US federation, boasting one gold and one bronze medal, celebrated the most successful Worlds in their history.
For the last time at the 1996 Worlds in Altenberg, Germany did not head the medal table. This privilege then went to Austria with three gold medals (Markus Prock, Tobias Schiegl-Markus Schiegel and the team competition).
