Reinhold Rainer ends his active career in luge
Jaufental/Val di Giovo, Italy (pps) Italy’s Reinhold Rainer, who competed in four Olympic Winter Games, has ended his active career in luge. The 38-year-old from Val di Giovo finished on 8th position both at the 1998 Winter Games in Nagano, Japan, and in front of a home crowd in Turin in 2006.
The long-time room-mate of six-time World champion Armin Zoeggeler achieved his best career result at the 2011 FIL Luge World Championships in Cesana, when he claimed a 5th place.
At the Viessmann Luge World Cup series, Reinhold Rainer celebrated one victory (in Park City in 2003), additionally he made it onto the podium three times. At the 2006 European Championships in Winterberg, Germany, he narrowly failed to claim a medal, finishing on 4th position. Since 1994 the luger from South Tyrol had a spot on the Italian national team. At the national Italian championships Rainer achieved a total of six second place finishes.
